Early English including Phonics

Our Intent

At Ingram Road Primary School, we strive to develop the full potential of all our pupils so they become confident, literate readers. Synthetic phonics is the first formal method for the teaching of reading that we use as it provides the foundations required to become competent and fluent readers. At Ingram Road, we follow the systematic approach of Floppy's Phonics. During their Nursery education, our children are provided with numerous and varied opportunities to hear and say sounds within the Floppy's Phonics scheme. Staff support this experience by ensuring the modelling of pure sounds at all times. As children progress through school, they will start to learn the letters to sounds correspondence with explicitly taught oral blending, a vital part of early reading. They will continue to learn all the sounds in the alphabetic code and their corresponding graphemes as they progress through the Floppy's Phonics' levels. We understand that once children are able to decode fluently, the teaching of comprehension is quicker and more effective as they are able to focus all of their attention to understanding what they read. Daily highly interactive and challenging lessons ensure effective learning and progress.
